julian's bar mitzvah

My nephew, Julian, had his bar mitzvah in September. I got to make a cake and about 10 dozen cookies for dessert back at the house Saturday night, which I was so excited to do! However, the process of getting all of those baked goods up to Northern CA from LA was a bit arduous. I bought a super cool hanging bag for my dresses that zips into a duffel, and it's got just enough room for a 12" cake box (and a whole bunch of cookies)! You should have seen me dragging that through the airport on top of my rolling suitcase. The duffel bag was extremely top heavy. And of course, it had to squeeze under the seat on Southwest. Luckily, it worked out great! I sent my in-laws ahead in the with all the ingredients I would need for the frosting, as well as offset spatulas, a cake turntable, and other gear. Friday night, after a lovely family dinner, I raced back to my sister-in-law's house and started making a giant batch of frosting.

Given the late hour after I finished making the frosting and filling and covering the cake, I kept the decorations pretty simple. Just some sprinkles and a congratulatory message. We ate it Saturday night, then again on Sunday at brunch, and people kept nibbling away til the entire thing was done. Julian was amazing and poised at his bar mitzvah, and I was so proud of him!
