One of B's best friends, Hudson, recently turned 18 and had a casino night party. The kids got dressed up and dealt blackjack and had a great time. (Hudson's parents host a casino night with blackjack every year, so the apple does not fall far from the tree.) We decided a casino-themed cake would be fun, so I made a vanilla/chocolate marble cake with green frosting (to look like the felt on the table), fondant poker chips, and a royal flush. The kids devoured it, which is the best praise any baker can ask for, and I thought it came out super cute!
I ordered an edible printout of the playing cards to stick onto the fondant, but I didn't look closely enough at the description and was pretty disappointed. Instead of individual playing cards, the printout was for a fan of five cards - not to mention the color was printed very poorly. I decided to make my own fondant cards instead. I rolled them fairly thin and waited until they had hardened enough that I could use edible marker to draw in the hearts.
One of my favorite things is to use fondant to capture the idea of something. I used cookie cutters to ensure the poker chips were uniform in size, then used a slightly smaller flat surface to make a slight indentation. But it was extremely cumbersome to create the little white edges, so I only did two on each chip. Real poker chips would have a lot more, but it's still perfectly obvious what they are!
