not about baking: hooded towels

I am really not a great seamstress, but I love my sewing machine. It's a 1950's-era Singer Featherweight, in terrific condition, and it has its own cute little carrying case. It even comes with the original instruction manual and extra parts I have no idea how to use. Best of all, it was my grandma Lorraine's, so I feel extra connected to her whenever I use it.

On a whim, I made the kids new hooded towels. Bug has a great one that's falling apart (which I can probably repair if I try), and Boy-o only has one that's kid-sized (we have a bunch of old infant-sized ones, and they just do not cut it). This is a great project! Super cheap, super fast, super easy. I used this tutorial, and the longest part was figuring out which way to pin the towels. But as Josh (and Norm Abram) says, "Measure twice, cut once." Even with my non-spatial brain, I think it took me an hour start to finish, including sewing on the appliques.

Aren't they so cute?

You can go as upscale or down as you want on towels. Two bath towels and one hand towel will make two hooded towels. I got mine at Bed, Bath & Beyond because I had store credit. They carry bleach-safe towels, which I'd never heard of! I even think you could get away with making the towel one color and the hood another color if you tied it together either with some double-bias tape (for the edges) or fun appliques. However, I figured any crooked sewing would be less obvious if the colors were the same. Next time, I might go wilder with the appliques, but to be honest, that was the most expensive part of the project!

I think these would make wonderful birthday or holiday gifts for kids!

Love it! We have two for Em. The first was a gift, and I loved it so much that I scoured Etsy for something similar. I found these: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=36809208 (For anyone who's too lazy to make their own - like ME!)
