elmo cupcakes

Our friend's daughter is turning 2 tomorrow. She is an Elmo fan, so Elmo cupcakes were specially requested. I made a dozen vanilla and a dozen chocolate (a special gluten-free mix that the birthday mom was kind enough to provide!) and decorated them with a combination of frosting, fondant, and mini-marshmallows.

I spread a thin layer of red frosting on the cupcakes, then used the grass tip to make Elmo's fur. I shaped orange fondant into noses. I placed two mini-marshmallows next to each other on a cutting board, then flattened them slightly with a rolling pin so they stuck together for googly eyes. Each marshmallow eye received a dab of black frosting, and I used the same black for the mouth. Next time, I would pipe the mouths on first, and then fill in the fur around it; I think it would look better if the mouths were flatter. For black frosting, it's way easier to use store-bought stuff: it takes so much food coloring to make black and it doesn't end up tasting that good.

They came out cute, they tasted good, and the birthday girl was happy, so that's the most important thing! Happy birthday, S!
